RESTRICTIONS ON LIQUIDS, AEROSOLS & GELS

For international flights the following restrictions apply:

1. 100mls maximum liquid or gels per container, to be put in a clear, sealed transparent 1 litre bag (one bag per person)

2. Containers larger than 100mls must be packed away in your checked in luggage

3. All transparent bags are to be screened through security

4. Liquids, aerosols & gels include perfumes, aftershave, drinks, sprays, gels, creams, toothpaste, creams and other substances that are in the form of liquid, aerosol & gel

5. Always check your Government's regulations on all restrictions for liquid, aerosols & gels as there may be new changes you need to be aware of

6. Check the restrictions for domestic and internal flights in the country you are travelling

PRE-FLIGHT SAFETY INFORMATION

PASSPORTS & VISAS

When you travel overseas make sure you have a valid passport of at least 6 months and check if other documentation such as visas are required to satisfy individual country entry requirements. Depending on your passport nationality and destination, additional requirements may include return or onward tickets and sufficient funds for your stay, otherwise you may be refused entry into that country.

TRAVEL ADVICE

All Governments issue safety warnings for countries with risks for travellers.  Visit your local emabassy or Department of Foreign Affiars for further information.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

It is strongly recommended you have good travel insurance for the entire time you plan to be overseas. Your insurance policy should cover emergency medical situations, baggage loss or damage, and any expenses that you may incur from unforseen circumstances.

VACCINATIONS

Ask your doctor if you require any vaccinations which are essential when travelling to some countries.  Always seek medical advice and have any vaccinations well before you leave incase of any side effects.

BAGGAGE

All airlines have limits on the amount of luggage and weight of luggage, an individual is allowed which will vary with each airline and where you are travelling to. Check with your airline for further information on checked in luggage and cabin luggage, including restrictions in place on liquids, aerosols and gels.  For lost or delayed baggage, make sure you have your reference number written down so your airline can check its status with baggage services or lost property.

IN-FLIGHT SAFETY INFORMATION

1. The following precautions may help prevent DVT:

2. Drink plenty of water during the flight.  Take some electrolyte powder to help prevent dehydration

3. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks before and during the flight.

4. Wear comfortable clothing & wear support stockings during the flight

5. Avoid take sleeping tablets when flying as the effect of these will further limit your mobility

6. Try to prevent your buttocks and thighs pressing on your seat and get up & walk around the cabin as often as possible

7. Keep your feet elevated as much possible

8. Do in-flight exercises every half-hour throughout the flight

9. If you have pre-existing risk factors for DVT you may need to take additional precautions so always seek professional medical advice

IN-FLIGHT EXERCISES

Have a sequence of in-flight exercises that you can do every regularly during your flight.  This may prevent against getting DVT.  Regular exercises aim to encourage blood flow from your legs to your heart and upper body exercises and can assist with improving circulation.  When performing the in-flight exercises take care and ensure all movements are done gently and slowly.  Any sudden jerking movements could cause you harm.

1. Foot circles. Lift both feet off the floor. Move both feet together & draw an imaginary circle with each big toe so that each foot rotates about the ankle joint. Continue for a minimum of 10 times in one direction, then repeat in the other direction.

4. Knee curls. Sit upright, lean forward whilst raising one knee at the same time. Hold your knee with both arms and pull your leg towards your chest as you lean back. Hold for approx 10 seconds, then release and lower your leg. Do the same for the other leg. Repeat the sequence 10 times.

2. Heel lift/Toe lift. With both feet flat on the floor, llift your heels as high as possible while leaving your toes and the balls of your feet on the floor. Lower both heels and repeat several times. Leave both heels on the floor and lift your toes and the front of your feet off the floor, flexing your ankle as far as possible. Lower and repeat several times.

5. Neck stretches. Place your head in an upright position. Drop your right ear towards your right shoulder as far as possible. Roll your head forwards and look down at your lap. Roll your head up towards your left shoulder, then lift your head to the upright position. Alternate the direction and repeat approx 10 times.

3. Knee raises. Sit with your back upright, feet flat on the floor & lift one leg up while keeping your knee bent, hold for approx 4-5 seconds, then lower. Do the same with the other leg. Repeat the sequence for at least 10 times for each leg.

6. Shoulder rolls. Sit upright, roll your shoulders gently backwards, continuing in a circular motion for a minimum of 10 shoulder rolls. Repeat the circles, rolling your shoulders forwards for the same amount of rolls as you did going backwards.

POST-FLIGHT SAFETY INFORMATION

Always keep hydrated after your flight and maintain a diet of light, healthy fresh foods.  Avoid excessive alcohol. Be alert for the signs and symptoms of DVT for up to approximately one month after flying, and always seek medical help if any symptoms occur
